What are Bacteria (example)

Bacteria (pl), or bacterium (s) are tiny microorganisms. One cannot categorize them as either plants or animals. Bacteria are single celled organisms that lack a nucleus (prokaryotic). They are only a few micrometers in length and generally exist in colonies of millions. They have the ability to be mobile thanks to their flagella and may often be found in soil, water, organic matter and the bodies of plants and animals.

The shape of bacteria varies, they can be spherical (cocci), rod shaped (bacilli) or spiral.

History

Single celled microorganisms appeared on earth about 4 billion years ago, and many say that they were the first life forms on Earth. The first two dominant forms were Bacteria and Achaea.

Cool Fact: Planet earth is estimated to hold at least 5 nonillion bacteria !! (^30)
